A day or two ago I was mentioning to a friend how in college my Black Nationalism was mediocre. I have always been Pro Black and anti nothing! But back to the original point, I was telling this friend that the older I get I find my Black Nationalism coming back and getting stronger and stronger...hmmm I'm still Pro Black and anti nothing. I'm for freedom and righteousness...
At the SCOPE Art Fair I met an amazing artist, a photographer named Nat Ward. He took the picture of this blue gorilla in Lebanon, FL. And yes such a place does exist ad apparently it is next to Crackertown, FL where Nat had a mullet sandwich in a local cafe. Not kidding.
Anyhow he explained to me that the blue gorilla is in a series he is currently doing called Graceland. It originally started with Elvis and the real Graceland and documenting this side of Americano life. During the process of seeking out these Graceland stories the project began to take on a different sort of meaning. He was kind enough to take me through all of his images and I am looking forward to the catalog of the work so you can read each story that he told me about the pictures.
Written in the back of a taxi on my way to interview Shepard Fairey and Fab 5 Freddy about graffiti.
Still at the Nike/Lance Armstrong STAGES benefit show...amazing artist Cai Guo-Quaing, Futura 2000, Shep Fairey just to name a few. Fun times!!! Oops someone just broke an installation. HA!
She is a girl from the Bay, not the Town but San Francisco. Went to Stanford and now makes this really rad art. I appreciate her use of color and space. How she represents her lights and her darks. Peep the last photo 'Truth Is...' she forms a square with the letters, which are colorful but each color is repeated once. iLikes
If you have not seen the "Your Bright Future" show at LACMA go quickly. There are many reasons to go, mine was Choi Jeong-Hwa, Kanye's would probably be Jeff Koons. Choi Jeong-Hwa a Korean artist uses color and everyday household items to create something unique and amazing. Peep the pic I took at the museum in Los Angeles of his commissioned outdoor piece called Happy Happy. The following pictures are of his work in various shows. The last pic is one of Jeff's Ballon dog pieces. He has a blue one inside LACMA now along with the cracked egg statue in the Koons/Warhol room.
